Dark is a color 2020–ongoing
Handmade chromogenic and gelatin silver prints

Dark is a color is an ongoing series of analog photographic prints that act as an optical research project on darkness within the context of Lebanon’s contemporary political and social history. Inspired by the chronic and cyclical electricity crises facing the country – specifically the power shortages and blackouts that resumed in 2020 – the series aims to address the specific ways of seeing that pertain to the Lebanese experience.

The works look at the absence of light as a mode of perception in itself, as well as a generative and creative space. Produced entirely in darkness, without the use of a camera or negative, they are created through the choreographed exposure of matter and light onto photosensitive paper, extracting from the depths of existing images, new ones that longed to appear.

While photographic reproduction presupposes the mediation of light, blind photography uses its lack as a condition for visibility, a means to make images spring into being through transformation.
